Catching Up With Gettoblaster
We catch up with Gettoblaster ahead of their Toronto debut this Saturday night.
Nov 23 2021
First of all, how are you and how has your 2021 been going so far?
Absolutely bananas! We have literally only had two weekends off since the beginning of May. From Dirtybird Campin, to Minni-Movement Festival in Detroit, to Spring Awakening in Chicago, to LA for Dirtybird BBQ, and really amazing Boutique festivals like “Don’t Trip”, to our residency in Las Vegas at Discopussy! Releases every week or every other week! Literally a dream come true…but we're wide awake.
After a long closure, the world is finally opening up again. What have you missed most about DJing?
Being a touring DJ, you create friendships all over the world. Seeing our friends everywhere has to be one of the biggest parts we missed. Actually playing our records, the ones we make, in front of a live audience. Seeing if the music I'm making works the way we envisioned it.
How would you describe your sound?
RAW! A lot of music these days is very polished. We both come from the early warehouse scenes of America, Chicago & Detroit. So our music reflects what we grew up with. Raw warehouse vibes, from time to time we flex on a track like “H O U S E” featuring Missy to show we can write music and piano lines and melodies, but we feel music was missing raw warehouse vibes, and that’s the element we loved the most. So that’s what we try to do.
What releases do you have lined up?
We have a lot in the pipeline. In just the last couple weeks we have had release on Chris Lakes “Black Book” label, Shiba San’s label “Basement Leak” and a remix we did for Peznt’ on “Motive Recordings" and recently on Javi Bora’s label “Too Many Rules”. In the near future we have a Gettoblaster, Illyus & Barrientos, & DJ Deeon release called “Ghetto Thang” on Anthony Attalla’s “Incorrect” label. Really stoked for this one. It comes with a Carlo Lio remix as well. Then later in December we are launching a new label called “Aliens On Mushrooms”! The first single is called “Make Life Funky”. This is produced and written Gettoblaster & Roland Clark, on remix duties we have Amine Edge & Dance, & Inner City! I can keep going, but keep your eyes peeled!
Who are your biggest musical inspirations (DJ or production)?
DJ Sneak , Derrick Carter, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Thomas Bangalter, Boys Noise, Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Bad Boy Bill, Terry Mullan, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Stacy Pullen, DJ Deeon, New Order...the list is long. Without these people, there would be no Gettoblaster.
What are you planning on bringing to the table for your Toronto debut this Saturday night at The Comfort Zone?
Definitely sharing piece of us with you guys. Our biggest records we have made (exclusive version of each), a bunch of unreleased music that you guys have not heard yet, and a ton of edits only we have.
What are your top 5 track selections that are guaranteed to go off?
Gettoblaster & DJ Funk “Booty Shake”
Claptone “Feel This Way” featuring Mayer Hawthorne (Gettoblaster Remix)
Gettoblaster “Phantom”
Gettoblaster “H O U S E” featuring Missy
Gettoblaster & Roland Clark “Make Life Funky”
Gettoblaster & Love & Logic “Get Risky” (Harry Romero Remix)
Sorry, couldn’t just name 5 lol.
What's something no one knows about you?
We love go cart racing lol...and collecting lots of shoes!
What will you do after answering these questions?
Pack my backpack for the next few days before Thanksgiving. We have shows in Pomona, California right outside of Los Angeles Tuesday night, Wednesday we are in Portland, Oregon for a show, then Thanksgiving dinner in Michigan, then coming to Toronto for The Comfort Zone!
